The automotive industry is one of the largest consumers of powder coatings worldwide. From alloy wheels to brake calipers, from suspension components to underbody protection — powder coating delivers the durability, corrosion resistance, and production efficiency that automotive manufacturing demands.
Automotive Powder Coating Applications
| Component | Coating Type | Film Thickness | Key Requirement |
| Alloy Wheels | Polyester or Acrylic clear + basecoat | 80-120μm total | Stone chip, brake dust resistance |
| Chassis/Subframe | Epoxy or Epoxy-Polyester | 60-100μm | Corrosion, stone chip impact |
| Brake Calipers | Heat-resistant polyester | 60-80μm | Temperature resistance (up to 200°C) |
| Coil Springs | Epoxy | 60-80μm | Flexibility, corrosion resistance |
| Engine Components | Heat-resistant silicone-polyester | 50-80μm | Heat resistance (up to 300°C+) |
| Door Hinges/Hardware | Epoxy-Polyester hybrid | 50-70μm | Wear resistance, aesthetics |
Quality Standards
Automotive powder coating must meet stringent quality requirements. Key tests include:
- Salt spray (ASTM B117): Minimum 500-1000 hours for exterior parts
- Gravelometer (SAE J400): Stone chip resistance rating
- Cross-cut adhesion (ISO 2409): Class 0-1 required
- Impact test (ASTM D2794): Minimum 40-80 inch-pounds
- Humidity resistance (ASTM D2247): 240-480 hours
Alloy Wheel Coating Process
The most visible automotive powder coating application is alloy wheels. A typical production line includes:
- Pretreatment: 7-stage chemical wash with chrome-free conversion coating
- Primer coat: Epoxy or epoxy-polyester powder (60-80μm)
- Cure: 180°C for 15-20 minutes
- Basecoat/color: Polyester powder (40-60μm)
- Cure: 180°C for 15-20 minutes
- Clearcoat: Acrylic clear powder or liquid clear (30-50μm)
- Final cure: 160-180°C
- Inspection: Film thickness, gloss, color match, defect check
