Frequently Asked Questions About Industrial Coating

Everything you need to know about powder coating plants, equipment selection, cost analysis, and technical details.

🔧 General Information

What is powder coating and how does it work?
Powder coating is a dry finishing process where finely ground polymer particles are electrostatically applied to metal surfaces. Parts are coated with powder charged at -50 to -100 kV, then cured in an oven at 160-220°C for 10-30 minutes to form a hard, durable finish. The result is a uniform coating that bonds directly to the metal substrate.
What is the difference between powder coating and wet painting?
Powder coating contains no solvents, produces near-zero VOC emissions, and achieves 95%+ material efficiency with recovery systems. Wet painting is solvent-based with 30-40% overspray waste but is better suited for heat-sensitive surfaces and field applications. Powder coating provides 60-150 microns in a single coat versus 15-40 microns for wet paint.
What materials can be powder coated?
Powder coating works on all metals including steel, aluminum, and stainless steel. With special processes, MDF surfaces can also be coated. It is not suitable for heat-sensitive plastics or standard wood because oven curing at 160-220°C is required.
How durable is powder coating?
Quality powder coating lasts 15-20 years. It delivers scratch resistance (9/10), impact resistance (9/10), chemical resistance (9/10), and excellent corrosion protection — far superior to wet paint. Super-durable polyester powders also provide outstanding UV resistance for outdoor applications.
Is powder coating environmentally friendly?
Yes, powder coating is one of the most eco-friendly coating methods. It produces near-zero VOC emissions, generates less than 5% material waste with recovery systems, and creates minimal hazardous waste. It easily meets EU REACH, EPA VOC limits, and supports LEED green building certification requirements.

🏭 Equipment Selection

Which booth type should I choose?
For single or few color operations, cartridge filter booths offer 98-99% recovery rates. If you run 5+ colors daily, cyclone booths enable color changes in 5-15 minutes. Automatic booths are ideal for high-volume production. Open-front booths suit small parts and manual application.
Which oven type should I choose?
Batch/box ovens are best for low-medium volume and varied parts, tunnel (conveyor) ovens for high-volume continuous production, U-turn ovens for limited floor space, and pallet conveyor ovens for heavy or oversized parts. Oven sizing should accommodate your largest part plus minimum 150mm clearance.
Which energy source should I use for my oven?
Natural gas offers the lowest operating cost and is ideal for high-volume plants. Electric provides excellent temperature uniformity (±5°C) and suits small-medium plants. LPG is an alternative where gas lines are unavailable. The oven consumes 60-70% of total energy, making this choice critical.

💰 Cost & Investment

How much does a powder coating plant cost?
A manual small-scale system costs €69,000-150,000, a semi-automatic medium-scale system €230,000-460,000, and a fully automatic large-scale system €540,000-1,310,000. These prices include pretreatment, booth, guns, oven, conveyor, controls, installation, and commissioning.
How long until the investment pays back?
Most medium-scale powder coating investments achieve payback in 2-4 years. Considering outsourcing costs of €200,000-400,000/year, in-house production at €150,000-250,000/year delivers 25-40% savings. Savings accelerate as production volume increases.
Can I buy used powder coating equipment?
Yes, but careful inspection is essential. Check oven insulation condition, booth filter and hose condition, conveyor chain wear, gun electrode status, and electrical panel condition. Avoid equipment without maintenance records, unclear sale reasons, or outdoor storage. Acrotech also offers used equipment assessment consultancy.
